Measure ensures that employees be paid equally and fairly
(SACRAMENTO, CA.) – Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) voted today in support of the California Fair Pay Act (SB 358), which was authored by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara). The bill would revise the California Equal Pay Act to prohibit employers from paying employees wage rates less than the rates paid to employees of the opposite sex for “similar work” as opposed to the current standard of “equal work.”
“I’m proud to have joined my colleagues today in supporting better pay for all women across our great state. Currently California women make 84 cents to every dollar a man earns, which is unacceptable! People should be paid equal and fair wages for the same work on a non-discriminatory basis and SB 358 will further that goal,” stated Assemblymember Garcia.
Senate Bill 358, the California Fair Pay Act, ensures that women are paid equally for work that is substantially similar to the work of their male colleagues, and do not face retaliation if they discuss or ask how much their male colleagues are paid.
