Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia’s Response to Governor’s Plan to Fund California’s Transportation Needs

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Today, Governor Brown, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) and Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) announced legislative proposal to fund California’s transportation infrastructure.

Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) has issued the following response:

“California suffers a $130-billion backlog of infrastructure needs. For decades our transportation needs have been increasing but ‘fix it’ funds have been dwindling.  A few years ago, a bridge collapsed in our district drastically disrupting commerce. Regular maintenance is imperative and more cost effective to our taxpayers than replacement. We absolutely must find a sustainable source of funding to meet current and future needs. The proposed legislation is a bipartisan compromise including elements from both Republicans and Democrats. I have had numerous calls from local leaders in support of this plan. I am also inclined to be supportive but currently reviewing the details. These investments would open avenues for job creation and economic development in both the Coachella and Imperial Valleys.”

Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) serves as the as the chairperson of the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks and Wildlife.  He represents the 56th district, which comprises the cities and communities of Blythe, Brawley, Bermuda Dunes, Calexico, Calipatria, Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, El Centro, Holtville, Imperial, Indio, Mecca, Oasis, North Shore, Salton Sea, Thermal, Thousand Palms, and Westmorland.
