Governor Brown Testifies in Support of Eduardo Garcia’s Legislative Package to Reduce Air and Carbon Pollution

AB 398 and AB 617 Pass Senate Environmental Quality Committee

(SACRAMENTO, CA) Today, Governor Brown testified on behalf of Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia’s (D-Coachella) legislative proposals to reduce air and carbon pollution. Together, AB 398 (E Garcia, 2017) and AB 617 (E. Garcia, C. Garcia and Santiago, 2017) propose a statewide climate action plan and program to meet our emission reduction mandate, ensure economic prosperity and address critical health and air quality concerns.

“Despite President Trump’s decision to withdraw our nation from the Paris Climate Agreement, California continues to lead the global charge on climate change.  I am proud to join Governor Brown, Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon in affirming our unwavering climate commitment and determination to work toward an agreement that would benefit both California’s economy and our environment,” assured Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, Chairman of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Climate Change Policies.

“Together AB 398 and AB 617 have been proposed to create an air quality and carbon reduction bill package that would build upon last year’s significant strides with SB 32 and AB 197. These measures seek to establish a comprehensive, statewide program to keep us on track to achieve our climate goals; all while retaining industry jobs, ensuring equity, addressing vital issues of air quality and public health issues in disadvantaged communities severely impacted by pollution.”

These measures successfully passed the Senate Environmental Quality Committee and are poised for a vote before the full Senate on Monday.
