Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia’s Statement on the RAISE Act, New Federal Immigration Proposal

(COACHELLA, CA) – Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) has released the following statement regarding President Trump’s support of the RAISE Act, new federal immigration proposal:

“I join California in our commitment to stand with and for immigrants, and the inalienable rights of families to stay together. President Trump has unveiled immigration legislation that poses great risks to commerce, our economy as well as the core values upon which our nation was founded. The RAISE Act would bar countless families from attaining the American Dream. Our current system has afforded many hard working, law abiding families, like my own, the opportunity to build their lives, pursue higher education and become integral members of our society and economy. Not only is this proposal void of compassion; it stands to jeopardize our Californian economy, where immigrants contribute $715 billion to our GDP.  Many of our local, Coachella and Imperial Valley industries such as tourism, service and agriculture are driven by a steady immigrant workforce. Here in California, we pride ourselves on broadening prospects for innovation and economic prosperity not limiting them and certainly never demonizing those looking to make a better life for themselves. I would urge Washington to deviate away from cruel, exclusive, “un-American” policies generated by base appeasing political rhetoric. As leaders of the free world, we can and must do better.”
