Proposed CA law would make ringing in the New Year safer for families
(COACHELLA, CA) — Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia’s (D-Coachella) AB 1559 - Community Engagement and Gun Violence Prevention Act was inspired in response to a New Year’s Eve experience that kept his family indoors.
“Firing guns up in the air on New Year’s Eve or any day of year is irresponsible, senseless and dangerous. AB 1559 would provide grants for public safety agencies to access gunshot detection technology designed to improve incident response time and deter gunfire. Our communities should not be reminiscent of war zones and gunshots in our neighborhoods should not be normalized. We owe it to our families to draft legislation that keeps them safe every day, especially for our kids.”
This bill currently resides in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. Assemblymember Garcia plans to continue moving this measure forward when the legislature reconvenes in January.
