(SACRAMENTO, CA) — Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) has issued the following response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s revised 2019-20 budget proposal:
“First of all, I am happy to see Governor Newsom uphold our shared commitment to California families and children in his revised budget proposal. The plan he has laid out reflects the largest-ever investments for our K-12 schools as well as establishes a clear and strategic road map for early childhood education and childcare financing.”
“Particularly, I was excited by the significant increase of funding available to local governments for homelessness emergency aid and I will set out to make sure these dollars make their way into our Imperial Valley, Coachella Valley, and Blythe areas. Homelessness is a critical issue impacting our region, including vulnerable populations like our foster youth and college students. Our Governor has also pledged substantial allotments to tackle university student housing and food insecurity.”
“The May Revision maintains funding for two free years of community college tuition for first-time full-time students as well as healthy increases for the California State University and University of California systems.”
“Our Governor reaffirmed his support for a reliable and sustainable safe drinking water funding source. He is absolutely right – it is a matter of values. Both the Assembly and Senate have made this issue an absolute policy priority. As the Chair of the Assembly Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committee, I have been working diligently with other members and stakeholders to explore all possible avenues to achieve an equitable and sustainable, safe drinking water solution that will work for all Californians. We cannot afford to wait; we must get this done this year.”
