(SACRAMENTO, CA) Today, Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) signed on to a joint letter from members of the California State Legislature urging Governor Newsom to build upon his March 16th Executive Order N-28-20 and implement an immediate statewide moratorium on evictions for the duration of the coronavirus (COVID-19) emergency. Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia has issued the following statement:
“Given the urgency of the COVID-19 public health crisis, my colleagues and I are calling upon the Governor to implement an immediate statewide moratorium on evictions. The situation has escalated rapidly since our Governor gave local jurisdictions the authority to halt evictions. With a stay at home order in effect, we cannot wait on over 500 cities and counties to adopt their own individual measures. Too few have done so, and we must act now to protect the public health of our residents. A consistent, uniform statewide measure helps ease public confusion as well as difficulties for landlords managing properties in multiple jurisdictions. Californians and their families are already struggling to make ends meet. No one should be worried about being evicted in the midst of a pandemic. Currently, our state is hard at work with local cities and counties to provide shelter for the homeless. Ensuring that all our residents are safe and secure in their homes is the best way to curb the spread of the coronavirus and save lives.”
