(Mexico City, Mexico) — Ahead of Earth Day, Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D-Coachella) gives voice to district environmental justice and climate equity priorities while representing the state at the California-Mexico 2030 Summit, Turning Climate Challenges into Opportunities, in Mexico City, Mexico. This binational summit, organized by the University of California Alianza MX, provided an opportunity for California, United States, and Mexican government officials to exchange research and identify strategic solutions to achieve a sustainable, economically robust, climate-resilient future for our communities.
“As California continues to lead the charge on climate actions, strengthening binational policy collaboration with Mexico is critical to protecting our shared border communities, suffering on the front lines of the climate crisis,” said Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on California-Mexico Binational Affairs.
“At the summit, we highlighted our work combating air pollution, safeguarding communities from extreme heat, galvanizing a robust clean energy economy, and shaping our emerging lithium valley opportunities while exploring innovative solutions for future partnerships.”
Assemblymember Garcia took to the stage in panels focusing on U.S Latino Leaders in the California-Mexico relationship and Lithium as a Critical Resource and joined discussions on mitigating the impacts of extreme heat — a major public health and safety concern for his desert-dwelling constituents.
California’s delegation also included Secretary for Environmental Protection Yana Garcia, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, California Air Resources Board Chair Liane Randolph, and Infrastructure Advisor Antonio Villaraigosa. Local environmental justice advocate Luis Olmedo, Executive Director of Comité Cívico del Valle, provided valuable regional insight on the lithium panel led by Assemblymember Garcia.
Throughout his tenure, Garcia has championed groundbreaking climate change and emission reduction legislation centered on ensuring equitable investments for environmentally and economically vulnerable areas.
California’s 36th Assembly District spans the US-Mexico border at the Calexico crossing. As Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on California-Mexico Binational Affairs, Garcia remains committed to strengthening relationships and policy collaboration with Mexican government officials on shared border economic, environmental health, and climate equity priorities.
